About SpecsByVIN
SpecsByVIN is a free tool that decodes vehicle identification numbers (VINs) and looks up open safety recalls. Enter a VIN and you get the make, model, year, body style, engine and assembly plant; enter a make/model/year and you get the recall history.
Where the data comes from
All specification and recall data is sourced directly from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) — the public vPIC decoder and recalls databases. We reformat and present that public information; we don’t create vehicle data ourselves.
What we don’t do
We don’t sell vehicle history reports and we don’t claim to show accidents, ownership or title status — that information isn’t in the VIN. We link to the official source on every recall so you can verify it yourself.
Independence
SpecsByVIN is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or authorized by any vehicle manufacturer. All company and model names are trademarks of their respective owners and are used only to describe the vehicles you look up.
