What a build sheet is
A build sheet is the factory’s record of how one specific vehicle was ordered: the option and RPO codes, paint and trim codes, the engine and transmission, and assembly details. On some brands a printed copy was tucked into the vehicle at the factory — under a seat, above the headliner or glovebox, or with the spare tire.

Where to get a build sheet by VIN
We don’t sell build sheets — here’s where the real one comes from, in order of what to try:
- The manufacturer’s owner portal. Some automakers expose build data or an option list by VIN on their official owner site. Whether it’s free and how far back it reaches vary by brand.
- A franchised dealer. A dealer for your brand can usually pull the original build record from the manufacturer’s system — a quick ask at the parts or service desk.
- Brand communities and paid decoders. For some makes (GM, Ford and Mopar/Stellantis are common examples) enthusiast forums and paid services can translate RPO/option codes. Confirm they cover your make and year first.

Can I get a build sheet free by VIN?
It depends on the brand. Some manufacturers expose build data by VIN through their owner portal (free for some, paid for others), and a dealer can often print it from the manufacturer’s system. The VIN decode on this page is free and instant for the core factory specs.
What is an RPO code?
RPO stands for Regular Production Option — the factory option codes GM lists on a build sheet (for example a code for a specific axle ratio or trim package). Other manufacturers use their own option-code systems. None of these codes are stored in the VIN itself.
Does the VIN list every factory option?
No. The VIN encodes model-, engine- and plant-level data, but not the full option or RPO list. That level of detail lives on the factory build sheet, which is a separate record from the VIN.
