Decoding a motorcycle VIN

Street motorcycles use the same 17-character VIN as cars, and the decode returns the make, model family, engine displacement and model year (encoded in the 10th character). Cruisers, sportbikes, touring bikes and scooters all decode this way.

One caveat is unique to two wheels: many off-road and competition bikes (motocross, enduro and trials models) don’t carry a full road VIN — they use separate frame and engine serial numbers instead. If a dirt bike returns little or nothing, that’s expected rather than an error.

Motorcycle VIN — FAQ

How do I decode a motorcycle VIN for free?

Enter the 17-character VIN in the tool above. It returns the make, model, engine displacement and year decoded from NHTSA data — no signup or payment.

Where is the VIN on a motorcycle?

The VIN is usually stamped on the steering neck (head tube) of the frame, and often on a sticker on the frame; the engine also carries its own number. It’s on your title and registration too.

Why won’t my dirt bike’s VIN decode?

Many off-road and competition motorcycles are not issued a full 17-character road VIN — they’re identified by frame and engine numbers. That’s normal for motocross, enduro and trials bikes.

Can I check motorcycle recalls?

Yes — use the recall lookup on this page by make, model and year. For VIN-specific recall status, use the NHTSA VIN tool.
